The welcome bag given out by the American Chamber of Commerce to promote American industry at an international summit has a good intention but may not send the right message: many gifts given to the guests are stamped "Made in China".

Delegates and other guests at the Summit of the Americas being held this week in Los Angeles are receiving plenty of goodies and samples from organizations wishing to advertise.

A meeting organized on the sidelines of the event and dubbed the “CEO Summit” brought together big names from industry and politics to discuss ways to develop the economy in certain disadvantaged areas of Central and South America.

Google boss and Joe Biden

The American Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the event, had provided for the participants, including the boss of Google, Sundar Pichai, the American president Joe Biden and the number three of Meta (Facebook) Nick Clegg, a pretty blue bag filled of gifts.

But a thorough inspection of its content reveals that it does not always highlight the production of American firms.

On the bottom of a thermos bottle, we can read "China" written in large capital letters and the pair of sunglasses given to the guests, certainly very useful to protect themselves from the Californian sun, displays the inscription "Made in China" on the label.

Asked by AFP, the American Chamber of Commerce did not react on Thursday afternoon.
