Memorandum of Understanding to protect the rights of authors and creators in the artistic and musical fields

The Ministry of Economy signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, a non-profit organization representing the interests of the sound recording industry worldwide, with the aim of developing new mechanisms to enhance the system of protecting the rights of authors and creators in the creative industries sector, especially in the artistic and musical fields in the UAE. Encouraging sound recording companies to invest and expand their business in the country's markets, by developing policies for collective management of intellectual works and works in this field.

The memorandum aims to support attracting the investments of companies operating in the creative, musical and artistic sectors to the UAE, and to enhance the work environment and climate for it by launching the first joint collective management of the work teams of the Ministry and the Federation, to undertake the tasks of preserving broadcasting and performance rights in the country, and launching awareness campaigns on rights Broadcasting musical materials and sound recordings, ensuring that copyrights are not infringed on companies operating in creative industries, and establishing a joint working committee between the Ministry of Economy and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, with the aim of organizing the foundations and work mechanisms for protecting copyright in the activities of sound and musical recordings and artistic creativity.

The Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy for the Commercial Affairs Regulatory Sector, Abdulaziz Al-Nuaimi, confirmed that the UAE, thanks to the directives of its leadership, has paid great attention to developing the environment for protecting intellectual property in its various applications, the most important of which is the protection of copyright and neighboring rights and intellectual works in all fields of literature, arts and sciences.

He added that the recording industry and artistic and musical creativity represent one of the prominent creative activities for which the state seeks to develop an intellectual protection system in accordance with best practices, in a manner that enhances the position of the UAE, a supportive and stimulating destination for creators and talents, and an attractive destination for projects and investments in this vital field.

He continued: "The memorandum represents a new step in the framework of the state's efforts to develop its intellectual property system to a new level, as the memorandum is the first of its kind in the region, and will enhance the state's keeping pace with all developments witnessed by the world in the field of protecting creativity and innovation, in line with the objectives and principles of the fifty. and determinants of (UAE Centennial 2071).

For his part, the President of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, Francis Moore, praised the efforts made by the UAE to enhance the climate for intellectual property, and to issue laws and legislation supporting the protection of the rights of authors and creators, noting that the Memorandum of Understanding provides an opportunity to ensure the continued development of the music industry in the country, stressing The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry is looking forward to cooperating and exchanging experiences with the Ministry during the next phase to enhance this trend.
