According to a first estimate released Tuesday by INSEE, inflation is 5.2% in May in France.

This symbolic bar, clearly exceeded due in particular to an increase in energy prices, had not been crossed since September 1985. Several factors are fueling this inflation.

DECRYPTION

The prices keep going up.

Inflation accelerated again in France in May, to 5.2% over one year, according to an initial estimate released on Tuesday by INSEE.

The 5% inflation mark, clearly exceeded due in particular to higher energy prices, had not been crossed since September 1985. Several elements feed this inflation.

First there are energy prices: + 50% for gas over one year.

There is also the price of fuel.

Despite the discount of 15 cents per liter at the pump, the price of a barrel continues to climb.

Another factor which explains this acceleration of inflation, the increase in food products: + 4.6%.

INSEE speaks of an atypical phenomenon, in other words, something not seen for years.

Inflation over time

There is of course the effect of the crisis in Ukraine, which is causing cereal prices to soar, but also the effect of trade negotiations, which have resulted in a price increase of 3% on average.

In fact, no sector seems to be spared by these price increases.

It's not going to get any better, warn the experts, since new trade negotiations are underway.
