There is a thing called 'drinking start lock' that prevents the car from starting at all when you drink alcohol.

In the United States, it was introduced 30 years ago, and the effect of preventing recidivism is high.

This time, the president also promised to introduce this system in Korea, but it is not progressing as quickly as expected.

Reporter Jeon Yeon-nam reports.

When I drink and blow the measuring device installed in the car, a failure indicator appears and the car does not start no matter how hard I press the button.

It's a 'drinking start lock', and you can start the engine only when you are not drinking alcohol.

The United States has been obliged to install this device on cars of habitual drunk drivers for 30 years, and it has been found that up to 70% of the devices are effective in preventing recidivism.

It is an evaluation that the introduction of this device is necessary as more than 40% of cases of us committing a recidivism even after driving under the influence of alcohol have increased by 3 percentage points in the past three years.

[Sang-Yong Yoo / Senior Researcher, Samsung Transportation Safety & Culture Research Institute: Even if there was an accident once, there is actually not much awareness, so the number of accidents happening again is increasing.

An analysis like this still shows that the awareness of habitual drunk drivers is weak (come out.)]

However, domestic introduction is slow.

The National Police Agency was planning to start a pilot project this year, but there is little interest in it as the National Assembly did not pass the relevant laws and thus did not receive a budget.

President Yoon Seok-yeol pledged to introduce the system with 300 billion won in taxes collected from alcohol during his presidential election.

Even now, there are voices calling for the introduction of the system quickly through active consultation.
