A frequently used argument against local public transport is the supposedly high price.

In fact, many tickets have only become less expensive than average since 2015, as the Federal Statistical Office reported on Monday.

Only rail journeys in local transport were 19 percent higher than the general price increase of 16.2 percent.

On the other hand, there were smaller price increases for network tickets, with which buses, trains and regional trains can be used in combination.

Single and day tickets were 14.4 percent more expensive in the period mentioned and monthly tickets only 12.9 percent.

In April of this year, the differences were even clearer because of the sharp rise in energy prices: These drove consumer prices up to an inflation rate of 7.4 percent, while public transport tickets were only between 1.7 and 2.6 percent more expensive than a year earlier.

On average, households spent 24 euros a month on tickets in 2020 - significantly less than in the pre-Corona year 2019 with 33 euros.
