2.2 TWh electricity savings in Dubai over 10 years

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, stated that the programs and initiatives to rationalize electricity and water consumption launched by the Authority achieved significant cumulative savings among the target groups, amounting to 2.2 TWh of electricity and 5.6 billion gallons of water between 2012 and 2021. With the equivalent of saving 1.2 billion dirhams, and reducing 1.1 million tons of carbon emissions, he praised DEWA’s customers from various sectors who contribute to efforts to preserve the environment and protect natural resources by rationalizing electricity and water consumption.

Al Tayer said: “The authority adopts an integrated strategy to raise awareness of the importance of rationalizing consumption and involving all customers and community members in efforts to protect the environment and preserve natural resources. We annually launch many initiatives, programs and awards to encourage a conscious and responsible lifestyle in the consumption of electricity and water through programs and activities.” Innovative targeting all consumer sectors to achieve the objectives of the Dubai Energy and Water Demand Management Strategy to reduce demand by 30% by 2030.

Between 2012 and 2021, the commercial sector saved 1.3 TWh of electricity (11%) and 2.5 billion gallons of water (19%);

Government and semi-governmental institutions achieved savings of 355 gigawatt-hours of electricity (11%) and 957 million gallons of water (21%).

As for educational facilities, they achieved savings of 366 gigawatt-hours of electricity (14%) and 1.4 billion gallons of water (21%).

The industrial sector achieved savings of 131 GWh of electricity (13%) and 200 million gallons of water (29%), while the residential sector achieved savings of 72 GWh of electricity (13%) and 583 million gallons of water (a rate of 25%).

The savings achieved are equivalent to the annual consumption of 211,000 apartments of electricity and 120,000 apartments of water.
