The price of electricity in Spain will sink tomorrow to

85 euros per megawatt hour

and will mark its lowest level so far this year, according to data published by the Iberian Energy Market Operator (Omie).

This average cost includes bands of 148 euros/MWh during the morning and less than 10 euros in the afternoon, a volatility that responds to the strong entry of renewables and to the lower demand in this time slot of the day.

The reduction also coincides with a

reduction in the cost of gas in Spain

, while in Europe it continues to increase due to the impact of the war in Ukraine.

This hydrocarbon is partly responsible for the sharp rise in electricity, since its use in electricity generation raises the cost of the rest of the energies that match its production in the marginal market.

For this reason, the Government seeks in Brussels to put a limit on its price.

The prices of the wholesale electricity market have a direct impact on the regulated rate --the so-called PVPC--, to which almost

11 million households in the country are covered,

and serve as a reference for the other 17 million who have contracted their supply on the free market.

The price in Spain will be much lower than that registered in other European countries.

This is very positive for the country, but it could condition the negotiations with the

European Commission

to approve a mechanism that allows Spain to intervene in the price of gas in isolation from the community rules.

The argument put forward by Spain is that its status as an "energy island" condemns the country to suffer higher electricity prices than in the rest of the continent.
