Mitsubishi Corporation, a major trading company, and ENEOS, the largest oil wholesaler, will collaborate to decarbonize Japan's aviation field.

The two companies have decided to consider manufacturing alternative fuels for aircraft that emit less carbon dioxide and commercializing domestic sales.

According to the announcement, Mitsubishi Corporation and ENEOS have agreed to form a partnership for the commercialization of the manufacture and sale of alternative fuels for aircraft called "SAF".

SAF is a biofuel made from plants and waste oil, and is said to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 80% compared to conventional fuels, and is used in combination with ordinary jet fuel.

Both companies say that domestic demand is expected to grow toward the realization of a carbon-free society, and they will secure plants and waste oil that are the raw materials for SAF, establish manufacturing bases for mass production of fuel, and have a domestic sales network. We would like to proceed with commercialization such as the construction of the fuel system at an early stage, and we will consider the details in the future.

Regarding SAF, 16 companies including domestic airlines and plant construction companies launched a new organization last month for domestic production, and Itochu Corporation, a major trading company, imported from Finnish companies this spring as well. We are planning to start supplying to airlines departing from and arriving at Haneda and Narita, and as global demand increases, the movement to improve the domestic supply system is accelerating.
