The National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) has dismantled the Government's attempt to place

Maite Costa

as "independent" in Enagás.

The Catalan socialist, former president of the National Energy Commission, has represented the Government in recent years in Red Eléctrica as a director at the proposal of Sepi.

But the third vice president,

Teresa Ribera

, with whom she maintains a close relationship of trust, wanted her to change companies and become a director of Enagás, in which Sepi is also the main shareholder.

She encouraged her to enter as an "independent director" in a clear attack on the Capital Companies Act as published by this newspaper on February 22.

The president of the Enagás Appointments Commission, former minister

Ana Palacio

, blessed the operation and it was approved by the company's full board of directors, but the CNMV has disavowed all of them and orders that, at least, it must wait one year to become an independent director.

At the moment, she only accepts it as "another external" as she does not consider another denomination possible.

This was reported this Monday by Enagás to the CNMV itself.

"The Company, at the request of the National Securities Market Commission, proceeds to reclassify the Director Ms. María Teresa Costa Campi to the status of "other external" director

given her recent relationship with the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI )

as proprietary director of Red Eléctrica Corporación, SA (REC)".

According to the statement, "the new category will be indicated in the information on this director on the Enagás website. One year after her resignation as proprietary director at REC, Mrs. Costa may be reclassified to independent status."

Costa is considered an expert in the energy market and has a resume to be a director of the gas company, but going from one day to the next from being dependent on the Government in Red Eléctrica to being independent in Enagás has been unacceptable for the CNMV.
