The armaments group Rheinmetall wants to supply Ukraine with used Leopard 1 main battle tanks.

"The first Leopard 1 could be delivered in six weeks," said CEO Armin Papperger on Monday to the "Handelsblatt".

A prerequisite for such a transfer would be the approval of the federal government.

Pappberger told the newspaper that Rheinmetall could supply up to 50 Leopard 1s to the armed forces of Ukraine.

According to the report, the main battle tanks are old stocks from other armies.

The condition of the vehicles is currently being checked, said Papperger.

The delivery can be made via the subsidiary Rheinmetall Italia and can be processed over a period of up to three months.

According to Papperger, Ukrainian soldiers could be trained to operate the Leopard 1 in a matter of days.

The prerequisite for this is that they are trained military personnel.

Representatives of Ukraine had repeatedly criticized insufficient arms deliveries from Germany.

There were also calls for greater commitment from the traffic light coalition.

On Monday morning, Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) said in Luxembourg that Ukraine needed “above all, heavy weapons”.
