Elon Musk has thrown Twitter into chaos.

Parag Agrawal, the CEO of the online platform, doesn't seem to know how to deal with his blustering new major shareholder.

A week ago he wanted to give Musk a seat on the board of directors, probably in the hope that the Tesla boss would steer his criticism of the company, which he has recently repeatedly expressed publicly and sometimes in a very sharp form, into more constructive channels.

But now it is said that Musk has decided not to accept the mandate after all.

Agrawal now suddenly says that it's better that way, and is striking a completely different tone than a week ago, when he expressly approved of Musk's entry into the committee.

And as if this back-and-forth wasn't troubling enough, he warns his staff not to get distracted by the Musk saga.

It won't be easy, as Musk continues to tweet what the company should do differently.

And now that he won't join the board of directors, a deal that would have capped his stake in Twitter is also moot.

He can now significantly expand his power with further share purchases.

It could be even more uncomfortable for the Twitter boss.
