Whether they manage a company's computer equipment or monitor mechanical or electronic machinery in a manufacturing plant, maintenance technicians are increasingly sought after by companies.

These repairers are one of the strong links in the economy.

Without them, there is no reliable equipment, no productivity, and therefore no sales or profits.

They are generally recruited in the industrial sector, where demand is greatest: electronics, automotive, aeronautics, mechanical engineering, transport, agri-food, chemicals, biomedical or even nuclear.

In the field

The primary goal of the technician is to do everything possible to avoid stopping production.

Its work revolves around three main missions: repair, prevent and optimize.

His days alternate between so-called "curative" interventions (following a breakdown), preventive operations (maintenance, checking of wear parts, tests and analyses, etc.) and improving the performance of systems or machines. for which he is responsible (through regular reporting to the coordinators).

If the technical aspect is undeniable, his position also embraces a human dimension, because he has to deal with many interlocutors (operators, spare parts suppliers, subcontractors, site managers), whether he must reassure in the face of stress and impatience.

Called upon to intervene at any time, often in an emergency and on sometimes complex problems, the technician is a person in the field, with sometimes variable hours (he may be on call at night and on weekends) who must keep aware of the latest technological advances and often work in a team.

With remote maintenance (especially in telecommunications and IT), you can also troubleshoot without moving.

Diagnosis and repair are carried out remotely, by telephone or directly via the Internet.

Varied training

The technician position requires the use of increasingly complex machines, and therefore sustained training.

Several courses exist, with many specialties.

Among the most common, let's mention the Maintenance baccalaureate (which is the minimum required), with, as a specialty, Industrial Equipment (MEI) or Aerostructure Technician.

Recruiters are very interested in holders of BTS or DUT (BAC +2 level), such as the BTS Industrial Maintenance, the BTS Mechanical and Industrial Automation, the BTS Electrotechnics, the DUT Industrial Engineering and Maintenance or the DUT Electrical Engineering and industrial computing.

For those who want a longer training, certain professional science and technology licenses, oriented towards industrial production management, allow them to specialize and gain access to maintenance manager positions.

Note that the more qualified you are in a specific and specialized field, the more you will be sought after.

Versatility, the key to success

Once in post, to evolve, there is no secret: versatility and experience will be your best allies, and you will then be able to aim, in particular thanks to continuous training, for the functions of team leader, but also, for example, security manager, customer manager or computer-assisted maintenance specialist.

Finally, in terms of remuneration, count on a salary of around 2,000 euros gross for a beginner technician.
