Consumer Sarah Muhammad said that the Ramadan season this year witnessed a new phenomenon represented in limiting discounts in major outlets with branches in a number of the emirates of the country, to goods of large sizes in terms of number and weight.

She confirmed that she was unable to purchase the goods she needed for the month of Ramadan, within the offers and discounted goods announced, as they are of large sizes and weights.

She explained that the outlet offered a type of rice weighing six kilograms, at 32.50 dirhams instead of 50 dirhams, a decrease of 35%, while the outlet offered a discount on an offer of 10 cans of cream, at a rate that exceeded 42%, from 39 dirhams to 22.50 dirhams. The price of an offer that includes three cans of tea (250 grams per pack) has decreased from 23 dirhams to nine dirhams, a decrease of more than 60%.

Muhammad called for diversifying the cuts, to include goods of different sizes and weights, pointing out that the current cuts deprive small and medium-sized families from buying the goods they need most during the month of Ramadan, because they consume a large part of their budget in buying goods they do not need, and will not consume, in addition to that the goods Perishable food, which increases food waste, and is a misplaced expenditure.

For her part, the consumer Razan Barakat said that the Ramadan discounts are many, and they were characterized by diversity, as they included a large number of food and non-food commodities, but she could not benefit from them, as they are concentrated in large-sized commodities in terms of weight and number.

She explained that one outlet offered a discount on a type of flour weighing four kilograms from 27 dirhams to 18.5 dirhams, a decrease of 31%, while another outlet offered two packages of rice weighing 25 kilograms, bringing their price down from 214.75 to 145 dirhams, a decrease of 32.5%.

She also referred to an offer of a type of juice that is in high demand in Ramadan (three kilograms), as its price dropped from 60.15 dirhams to 37.75 dirhams, a decrease of 37%.

Barakat called for diversity, and offered discounts on different sizes of goods, pointing out that her house is small, and there are no suitable places for long-term storage, to maintain the quality of goods, especially perishable food.

She also pointed out that paying her to buy large quantities of goods she does not need drains a large part of the monthly budget, and misplaced spending.

In the same context, consumer Akram Zaitoun said that the reductions are many and include a variety of goods, with discounts exceeding 40%, but they are limited in some outlets to goods of large sizes.

Zaitoun considered that buying these commodities with these specifications is wasteful and misplaced spending, since part of them will be destroyed, in addition to it draining a large part of the budget, which prevents families from buying other commodities that they need more.

He said that the outlet offered an offer for five oil bottles with a total volume of more than five liters, bringing their price down from 63 dirhams to 42.50 dirhams, a decrease of 32.5%, in addition to reducing the price of 28 packages of coffee by 25%. The offers also included a reduction in the price of washing powder from 45 dirhams to 35 dirhams, and the price of four boxes of dumpling mixture (500 grams per pack) was reduced from 21 dirhams to 12.50, with a 40% decrease.

In addition, an official in one of the major outlets, Ali Daoud, expected that the month of Ramadan this year will witness a return to feasts and family gatherings after the Corona virus pandemic has declined significantly, which raises the demand for large-sized goods.
