In Yemen, the Saudi-led coalition announces a ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, which is due to start in the coming days.

This announcement comes after that of the Houthi rebels who announced a three-day truce on Saturday, and as discussions open this Wednesday, March 30 in Riyadh on the Yemeni conflict.

Hope for calm after months of heavy fighting: Houthi rebels were still carrying out attacks on the Saudis last Friday and the anti-Houthi coalition regularly bombs rebel-held territory.

This announcement of a ceasefire is therefore welcome.

It comes from both the Houthis, backed by Iran, and the Saudi-led coalition that has been intervening in Yemen since 2015, in support of government forces.

Truces still fragile

Riyadh affirms, with this truce during the month of Ramadan, to want to create a climate favorable to the discussions on Yemen which open this Wednesday in Saudi Arabia.

Discussions which, however, have little chance of succeeding since the main protagonists, the Houthi rebels, have refused to come and negotiate in “

enemy territory

 ”.

At the same time, negotiations are underway for an exchange of prisoners, which would always constitute progress.

But the truces in Yemen are still fragile.

The war has lasted for more than seven years, it has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths, displaced thousands of civilians and caused a serious humanitarian crisis.
