Do you like challenges, chase new customers and touch everything?

The job of business developer may be for you.

Swiss army knife, this position has become central in the landscape of the web and start-ups in recent years, as evidenced by a joint study published in 2019 by Pôle emploi and Linkedin.

The profession of business development specialist (a less fashionable French term) is in fact at the top of the three professions identified as being the most "emerging", in other words which have experienced the greatest increase in their proportion among recruitments made between 2012 and 2017.

A strategic position

The profession of business developer is not so easy to describe, as it is positioned at the crossroads of various skills.

At first glance, one could first assimilate him to a high-end commercial, since he develops commercial strategies and ensures customer prospecting.

His function is in fact much broader insofar as this professional must always be on the lookout for new market opportunities in order to develop his company's activities.

The "biz dev", as it is called in the jargon, essentially aims to support the development of start-ups and other digital companies by constantly finding new levers for growth.

It is therefore up to him to coordinate the ideas of the marketing, sales and financial teams to provide innovative solutions and projects capable of increasing turnover.

And once the project is well determined, he then passes the baton to the experts, while monitoring the implementation remotely.

real swiss army knife

A born challenger, a seasoned strategist, very curious and always on the lookout for market possibilities, the business developer must also have a very good sense of interpersonal skills, in order to gain the trust of new clients.

Anticipation of needs, spirit of conquest and creativity in finding innovative solutions are still part of the qualities necessary for this jack-of-all-trades professional.

Suffice to say that with such a profile, you will not only have to go through a business school or an engineering school diploma, but that it may also be wise to complete your course with a cycle in management, marketing or in finance.

The good news is that masters specializing in this profession are beginning to develop in certain business schools and other

, sometimes even integrating work-study programs in order to set foot in the stirrup more quickly.

One more proof that this profession, which is in great demand by companies, has a bright future ahead of it.

And on the salary side?

As a central and strategic position in companies, the business developer can claim 35,000 euros gross per year (excluding commissions) at the start of his career, i.e. nearly 3,000 euros gross per month.

But the salary can climb quite quickly depending on the company and the experience.

Senior profiles thus show around 4,000 euros gross monthly, with a variable part, knowing that salaries are literally soaring internationally.
