The new energy partnership with the United States is a big step for the EU away from dependence on Russia.

The 50 billion cubic meters of extra liquefied gas that are to be shipped across the Atlantic each year can replace a third of Russia's gas imports.

This is a strong signal following the announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that he would only accept rubles for gas supplies.

Finally, Putin has thus confirmed that he is ready at any time to use the gas as a weapon.

The EU continues to refrain from the embargo demanded by many, but which is economically difficult to lift in the case of gas.

However, the long-term commitment to the USA has a comparable effect.

That comes at a – high – price.

The EU must expand the infrastructure.

American LNG is more expensive than Russian gas.

But after the outbreak of the Ukraine war, that's really no longer a decisive argument in this case.

It is all the more important that the EU takes the next step and quickly reduces the consumption of fossil fuels.
