The food sector has made

a new appeal to consumers so that they do not overstock their purchases for the weekend

, hoping that the meeting that the Government has today with the carriers can stop the strike that is breaking the supply chain.

Throughout the week the main associations representing the food chain (primary sector, industry, distribution...) have asked consumers to buy responsibly, despite the fact that there are already shortages of some products, especially milk, in the supermarkets in certain areas of the country most affected by the strike.

Specifically, this Thursday it was the director of Competitiveness and Sustainability of the Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB), Paloma Sánchez Pello, who asked for calm:

"People get nervous about the possibility of shortages,

the problem It is very complicated, but the sector is responsible and has shown it throughout the pandemic and will try by all means to supply whenever it can," Sánchez Pello told Telecinco in statements collected by Europa Press.

Yesterday the agri-food sector appeared to insist on the same idea: both industry and distribution are making enormous efforts, despite the circumstances and at extra cost, to make supermarkets have products of all categories.

It is costing distribution an extra 130 million euros a day to get the merchandise to the stores

, as there are trucks that are sabotaged, others need an escort from the State Security Forces and Bodies to reach their destination, and in many cases resorting even to vans.

Inventory management

"We have supply problems, but there will be no shortage problems,

the stores will have full food baskets available," said the president of the Association of Spanish Supermarket Chains (Aces), Aurelio Del Pino, who asked that they be avoided. compulsive purchases that, "far from solving the problem, further complicate the management of stocks in stores".

Distribution is making daily efforts

"to reorganize the assortment so that consumers can make their complete purchase,

with products from all categories," insisted Felipe Medina, technical general secretary of Asedas, who also represents supermarket chains in Spain. .

What is most lacking is milk and some fresh, although it depends on the areas.

Galicia, Asturias and Andalusia, where the strikes are strongest, are the ones that are suffering the most from this shortage.

The distribution guarantees that there will be complete baskets with the basic products of the different categories, so that

even if a product of a specific brand is missing, the consumer can always find an alternative.
