A tripartite summit on Tuesday brought together Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Crown Prince of the Emirates Mohamad bin Zayed in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in the Red Sea.

The official Egyptian statement talks about exchanges of views on the latest developments in international and regional issues, says RFI correspondent in Cairo,

Alexandre Buccianti.

But it is indicated from an unofficial source that it is Iran that would interest the three leaders above all.

More specifically, “

the regional threat that Tehran would represent in the event of the signing, at any price, of an Iranian nuclear agreement

”.

An agreement which according to the participants would not take into account the threat of Iranian ballistic missiles.

Another major regional player was indirectly represented by the Emirates, Saudi Arabia.

Its Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman recently declared that Israel was “

a potential ally

”.

Riyadh has not digested the weakness of the American reaction after a series of attacks with Iranian ballistic missiles against its territory.

The oil question

But there has also been talk of oil as

the Russian offensive in Ukraine continues

.

The Gulf countries, including the Emirates, are indeed resisting Western pressure to increase production and thus curb the surge in crude prices.

But also food safety.

Egypt imports 85% of its wheat

and 73% of its sunflower oil from Ukraine and Russia.

This tripartite meeting is the first of its kind.

Egypt is the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, ending the state of war between the two countries.

The United Arab Emirates, an oil monarchy in the Gulf, normalized its relations with Israel in 2020.
