Teresa Ribera

rectifies and renounces her proposal to limit the wholesale price of electricity to 180 euros per megawatt hour.

The change of position comes just four days after the Vice President of Ecological Transition herself confirmed in an interview that this was one of the measures on which the Spanish and Portuguese governments were working together ahead of the key European Council this week .

What Ribera and Moncloa did not count on was the strong response received by the leak of the news.

Industrial employers, consumer associations, experts and even the manager of the electricity market himself warned that intervening in the market by establishing maximum prices could further destabilize the bill and would mean, in the end, perpetuating a historically high price reference in Spain.

The rectification also occurs in the middle of Pedro Sánchez

's round of meetings

to defend the intervention of the electricity market a few days before the meeting of European leaders.

Until now, the Spanish government has defended limiting the maximum price at which gas-fired power plants can offer or, as a second option, taking them directly off the market.

This option would be better seen by the countries of northern Europe, opposed to establishing rules contrary to the free market.

With the idea of setting a maximum price aborted, the Government's energy team is working "intensely" on a new proposal that would advocate less market intervention, according to El Periódico de la Energía.

Sources from the Ministry of Ecological Transition confirm to EL MUNDO that the limit of 180 euros has been ruled out, but they do not detail what the new measure would consist of.
