• Felipe VI Awards supports SMEs: "Guaranteeing that your activity can be carried out in the best conditions is necessary"

"We have experienced and continue to experience a period of instability, which has had

a very negative impact on

economic activity."

Felipe VI has been so forceful and realistic during the delivery of the SME of the Year Awards.

The King has presided over this fifth installment of the awards granted by Banco Santander in collaboration with the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and has delivered a speech in which he has been very crude with the economic reality that Spain is facing.

From the auditorium of the Santander Spain headquarters, Don Felipe recalled that SMEs are "

the backbone

of our productive fabric. The basis of the Spanish economy".

Because small and medium-sized companies, as the King has stated, account

for 99% of the national business group,

"and are responsible for generating more than 62% of wealth and 66% of employment" in Spain.

The King has delivered a speech full of adjectives.

He has described these times as " extremely

harsh circumstances

", "

great uncertainty

" and

"obvious difficulties"

.

Despite these adversities, Felipe VI congratulated SMEs for "being able to maintain your businesses and, with them, economic activity".

Don Felipe has glossed the difficulties that companies are facing at the moment: "Those related to supply chains,

energy prices ,

inflationary

pressures

and geopolitical instability."

Felipe VI has recalled that to all of the above "is added the fact that tourist services continue to lag behind due to limitations on mobility".

If the economic difficulties were great due to the pandemic, now, due to the war in Ukraine, we are experiencing

"exceptional circumstances",

as Don Felipe has recognized.

This situation has "a direct impact" on the economy.

"The effort is going to have to continue to be very necessary", recognized Don Felipe.

The King has recalled that SMEs "require

the greatest

possible institutional support" so that they can "generate a change of greater significance" and strengthen the business fabric.

Don Felipe believes that to achieve this, it is key "that European funds contribute unequivocally and profoundly to

promoting the modernization

of our country".

In addition to institutional aid - "in the Crown you will always find support" -, the King has stated that "

public-private collaboration

is decisive in contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of these funds".

This idea of alliances between the two sectors is, according to Felipe VI, "an irreplaceable role" to address "

urgent and far-reaching transformations

"
