The anniversary of the beginning of the revolt against Syrian power coincides this year with

the invasion of Ukraine

by Russia, which has been involved in the war alongside the Syrian army since 2015. It is therefore against the regime Syria and against Moscow that the demonstrators let their anger explode.

In the city of Idleb, controlled by pro-Turkish rebels and jihadist groups, 5,000 people chanted slogans against President Bashar al-Assad and his ally Vladimir Putin.

Northwestern Syria, which is beyond the control of Damascus, is regularly the target of raids by Russian air force, which has a major air base in the coastal province of Latakia.

Ukrainian flags or placards with messages demanding action against the Russian president were visible in the crowd.

Demonstrators expressed their solidarity with Ukraine, believing that they were leading the same fight with Ukrainians against a common enemy.

In two-thirds of Syria controlled by government troops, the anniversary of the start of the uprising has gone unnoticed.

Giant portraits of

Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin

shaking hands have been installed in the squares of major cities and on the main arteries of the country.
