Presented in 1965, the Toyota 2000 GT was the Japanese response to the Jaguar Type E. Boasting a 6-cylinder engine with a displacement of only 2 liters and 150 hp, it showed great technical modernity, with for example a gearbox 5-speed gearbox or a limited-slip differential.

But, sorely lacking in imagination outside its country of origin, Toyota unfortunately sold the 2000 GT very badly, which suffered from a selling price that was too high.

Produced in only 351 units, it has become a highly sought-after collector's item which generally sells for around one million euros.

And the car recently offered by Gooding & Co is even rarer.

This is one of the three cars which were entered in the race in the USA by the famous driver and preparer… Carroll Shelby, also known for his famous Cobra and his Mustangs.

The trio's first car built for racing, this one aroused the envy of several enthusiasts, the most relentless of which pushed the auction up to the astronomical sum of €2,290,550.

As a result, this is to date the most expensive Japanese car in history!
