The outbreak of the

war in Ukraine

and the

economic sanctions

imposed on Russia have pushed fuel prices to their all-time high.

Despite the fact that this price escalation began at the beginning of 2021 -with the increase in demand brought about by the economic recovery after confinement- the conflict has aggravated this situation, causing a more disproportionate increase.

Since the invasion began on February 24,

gasoline has become 10.8% more expensive and diesel, 14.6%

.

A rise that is driven, in part, by the rise in the price of crude oil in international markets, which is already trading at around 120 dollars per barrel, according to the Spanish Association of Petroleum Product Operators (AOP).

In this way,

filling the tank in Spain is today 36.58%

more expensive than a year ago

, when the liter of unleaded gasoline registered 1,265 euros and today it marks 1,412 euros per liter.

And the same goes for diesel, when in March 2021 the price was around 1.25 euros per liter and this week it reached 1,700 euros per liter.

Refueling is increasingly costly for Spanish drivers, who continue to suffer the consequences of this exponential and unrestricted rise in fuel prices.

Some have even seen how gasoline exceeded the psychological barrier of

two euros per liter

during the day of Wednesday, March 9 .

In total, there have been

eleven gas stations

that marked this figure on their signs, according to data published by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge that this newspaper has compiled.

All these stations are distributed throughout Galicia, Asturias, Gerona, León, Seville and Pontevedra.

In fact, at a gas station in the Coruña town of

Castriz

, 95 unleaded gasoline reached a price of 2,109 euros per liter.

However, there are another 40 stations located throughout the Spanish territory that are already at 1.99 euros per liter of gasoline 95, bordering on the fateful two euros.

In the following map you can see where the 51 gas stations that register the price of gasoline 95 above 1.99 euros per liter are located.

This upward trend affects most Spanish passenger cars since

gasoline 95

is the fuel that registers, together with

diesel

, the lowest rates.

In addition, Repsol explains that this type of unleaded fuel is the most recommended for conventional vehicles because it helps reduce consumption and emits fewer polluting particles.

In the case of diesel, there are 6 gas stations that register prices above two euros: the most expensive, the station located at kilometer 9 of the M222, in the Madrid town of Estremera, where on Wednesday it registered 2,059 euros per liter.

The remaining five are located in Albacete, Huelva, Gerona, Alicante and Zaragoza.

Although the price of fuel depends on each gas station, the autonomous community where the tank is filled is also significant.

In this way, the autonomies in the autonomies in which both gasoline and diesel have become more expensive have been Cantabria, Murcia, Aragon and the two archipelagos.

In addition to the two autonomous cities, which have experienced a variation of more than 15% since January 2021, when this price escalation begins to be reflected.

In the case of diesel,

Andalusia was the autonomous community that experienced the highest price increase

, with a variation of 20% in the last 18 months.

Another of the great rises has been in gasoline 98, generally more expensive.

For drivers of vehicles that require this type of fuel, it is more difficult for them to find gas stations where they can refuel at a price of less than two euros, since in total 1,697 of the 11,561 stations that are distributed throughout the country, the price of fuel reached e It even exceeded two euros this Wednesday, most of them in Madrid and Barcelona, although the most expensive has been one located in Bembibre, in the province of León, where it marked

2,250 euros per liter.

The rise in fuels is added to the

increase in electricity and gas prices

, which have also skyrocketed for months and the new situation caused by the conflict does not seem to change.

Prices continue to set historical highs and we also find them in the alternative to diesel and gasoline such as gas.

Hybrid

cars and plug-in hybrids

are also registering significant increases in their prices.

In this way, cars that run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (

LPG

), such as taxis, among others, and those that use compressed natural gas (

CNG

), have experienced increases of almost one euro per liter in the last year.
