• The war in Ukraine puts pressure on the price of food: they are already 21% more expensive than a year ago

The invasion of Ukraine has triggered the

price of gas and oil

, taking

electricity

in Spain to a historical record - it exceeded

500 euros per MW/h

on Monday for the first time in history - and further aggravating the inflation problem that already haunted the global economy.

For Spain, the economic impact will be high, as it is a country dependent on foreign countries and a net importer of gas and oil.

Growth will slow down and inflation will remain rampant, something that households will notice especially when paying electricity, refilling the deposit or making purchases.

According to

Euler Hermes,

a French insurer owned by Allianz, the

average energy bill of Spanish families

will reach

170 euros per month in 2022,

30% more

than

last year.

This leaves the

average annual household bill

at around

€2,000

, in line with what Italians will pay.

The bill will be even higher in other European countries: €283 per month in Germany, €250 in the UK and €233 per month in France.

The rise in electricity and food will affect especially the

most vulnerable families

or those with a lower income level, since for them these items represent a higher percentage of consumption.

"

Low-income households will be the most affected

by the increase in oil and gas prices, since their energy bills tend to represent a greater part of consumption, 5% in Spain", points out the insurer, which owns together with Mapfre the joint venture Solunion.

In general terms, the Spanish will suffer a

decrease of 1.5% in their disposable income

to consume.

It is true that households in Spain accumulated savings of around 42,000 million euros in 2021, according to the latest data published by the Bank of Spain, but this volume of savings will not be enough to face the increase in costs that they will experience this year.

Precisely because

that accumulated wealth is not distributed homogeneously among households

, but rather is held by families with more economic capacity.

Rising prices will deter families from consuming.

According to the French firm,

the consumption of Spanish households will fall by at least 0.4%

, which in turn will affect the

growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Measures to lower the light

To counteract this effect, they calculate that

the Government would have to approve an additional stimulus package

worth

10,000 million euros

.

"Acting both on energy demand (i.e. rationing of non-essential activities) and on supply (i.e. strategic reserves) could help: a cut in the supply of oil and gas for non-energy uses would

increase supply for energy use by around 6% in Spain

", they point out.

Governments are in a

difficult position

to try to contain inflation or alleviate its impact on household pockets.

They can resort to

fiscal measures

(tax reduction, transfers to households...), impose price ceilings or intervene in some way in the energy market.

Last week, the Spanish Executive approved a series of initiatives to contain the effect of the war on consumer bills, including the extension of tax reductions on taxes levied on electricity bills until June

30.

The

European Commission

said on Tuesday that it was open to

"temporarily" limiting the automatic contagion of the gas shortage

-by not counting on the Russian-

to the price of electricity

.

"The Commission will study all possible options for emergency measures to limit the contagion effect of gas prices on electricity prices, such as temporary price caps," they said in a statement, but

have not yet put forward any definitive proposal .

.

As reported in a statement, they have proposed "an outline plan" for

Europe to be independent of Russian fossil fuels well before 2030, starting with gas

.

Ursula von der Leyen will discuss the Commission's ideas with European leaders in Versailles at the end of this week and then she will work to implement them quickly with my team, she has promised.

Meanwhile, households already pay more than

2 euros per liter when they fill up the

gas tank and this Wednesday they will pay

472.97 euros per megawatt and per hour

when they turn on the light or put on the washing machine.
