The president of Algeria,

Abdelmadjid Tebboune

, has revealed that he has received a call from the Prime Minister,

Pedro Sánchez

, to "strengthen" the alliance between the two countries in the midst of a gas escalation.

The conversation took place on Sunday and has become known in a statement from Tebboune.

According to his version, Sánchez conveyed

"his willingness to work for the development and strengthening of the association between the two countries"

and to thank him for Algeria being "a reliable energy partner."

Tebbune has not revealed that he responded to her.

The Prime Minister's call comes at the height of the European countries' race to ensure gas supplies and follows a trip by the Italian Foreign Minister,

Luigi di Maio

, to Algiers to obtain more supplies through the Transmed gas pipeline that links the two countries.

The TTF gas price index is at its highest since the Russian aggression against Ukraine and both this energy source and oil are triggered by the US threat to extend its Kremlin sanctions to these products.

This also triggers record increases in the price of electricity in European countries, including Spain.

There is also a delicate moment in relations between Spain and Algeria, because, as EL MUNDO has published, Tebboune welcomed with discomfort the announcement by the third vice president,

Teresa Ribera

, that Spain would pass gas to Morocco through the gas pipeline closed by Algiers.

However, such an announcement last month has not yet materialized.

Algeria has so far guaranteed Spain that it will comply with "the signed contracts" and will continue to supply gas in two ways: increasing the capacity of the other gas pipeline that links the two countries through the Mediterranean (Medgaz) and compensating for the rest with methane tankers , built to transport liquefied gas (LNG).

Ribera has also affirmed that Algiers is willing to increase supply after the European crisis with Russia.

The conversation with Sánchez also comes in full preparation for this week's extraordinary European Council in which President

Charles Michel

has assured that the diversification of gas supply to reduce dependence on Russian gas will be on the agenda.

For Spain to be able to re-export Algerian gas, it needs more interconnections with France and both Sánchez and the president of the European Commission,

Ursula Von der Leyen

, assured on Saturday that it is necessary to give these projects a boost.

According to the Algerian version, the question of Western Sahara and relations with Morocco were not discussed in the telephone conversation.
