46% increase in electricity production in the UAE within 10 years

The total electricity production in the UAE at the end of the year 2020 increased to 137,310 GWh, compared to 93,949 GWh at the end of 2010, an increase of 46%, and the amount of electricity generated increased to 43,361 GWh, according to data from the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center.

The volume of electricity consumed in the country at the end of the year 2020 reached 130,280 GWh, compared to 89,587 GWh at the end of 2010, an increase of 45.5%, with a consumption of 40,693 GWh.

The total electricity exported from the state in the year 2020 amounted to about 234.8 GWh, while the total electricity imported by the end of the year 2020 amounted to 206.4 GWh.

The installed capacity of power plants increased by the end of the year 2020 to 34,901 megawatts, compared to 23,198 megawatts at the end of 2010, an increase of 50.4%, with a capacity of 11,702 megawatts.

The installed capacity of power plants in the year 2020 was distributed among the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, with a share of 19,086 MW, or 54.6%, while the installed capacity of the power plants of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority amounted to 12,300 MW, or 35.2%, while the share of the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority amounted to 2812 MW, at a rate of 0.08%, and Union Water and Electricity, with an installed capacity of 703 MW, at a rate of 0.02%.

The amount of electricity produced from renewable energy increased by the end of the year 2020 to 5476.2 GWh, distributed among 5223.7 GWh of solar photovoltaic energy, constituting 95.38% of the total energy produced from renewable sources, and the amount of electricity produced from concentrated solar energy constituted 4.59% with an amount of It amounted to 251.6 GWh, while the amount of electricity produced from landfill gas represented 0.02% of the total electricity produced from renewable energy, with an amount of 0.9 GWh.

The data indicate a significant increase in electricity generation from solar energy. The amount of electricity produced from solar energy in 2020 increased by about 45% over the amount produced in 2019, with an increase of 1696.45 GWh.

This shows the state's interest in encouraging the production of electricity from clean sources and reducing the carbon footprint.
