90% of Egypt's wheat imports from Russia and Ukraine... What are the alternatives?

Questions arise in Egypt about the country's need for wheat, as it imports 90% of it from Russia and Ukraine.

Cairo 24 reported that Egypt is the largest importer of wheat in the Middle East, as it imports 13 million tons from Russia and Ukraine, equivalent to 90% of its needs. It is also the first in the world to import maize from Ukraine during the 2020-2021 agricultural season.

Regarding the alternative plans available to the Egyptian government, the website quoted a former advisor to the Minister of Supply, Nader Nour El-Din, as saying that the government directed the import of wheat in equal quantities from the United States, France, Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan, Brazil and Romania.

He added that the temporary exit of Russia and Ukraine from exporting grain will begin to affect global stock markets this week.

"Egypt possesses a strategic stockpile of all commodities, which leads to a delay in our feeling of the crisis at the local level," he said.
