Whether you are a fan of road-trips, hate taking the bus or simply prefer to maintain total freedom of movement during your tourist getaways, you have necessarily already opted for a rental car.

Not only is this type of contract practical and quick to take out (valid driver's license, identity document and credit card imprint are generally sufficient), but the strong competition reigning in this market makes it possible, as a bonus, to obtain advantageous rates.

In any case, it was true before the health crisis…

Tensions in the rental market

Unfortunately, the global shortage of electrical components has passed through this, leading in its wake to a decrease in the manufacture of new vehicles and, consequently, a drop in rental car inventories.

According to the recent report drawn up by the online comparator Carigami.fr, a partner of six international rental companies and seven brokers, the fleet of rental vehicles was reduced by 40% in 2021 compared to the previous year.

However, at the same time, the French have been very demanding for means of transport after each period of health restrictions.

A market tension that could only lead to higher prices!

More than 45 euros per day

According to this study, carried out on the basis of reservations made on Carigami.fr, rental prices increased by 43% for all the destination countries offered in 2021, compared to 2019. That year, the platform recorded an average price of 32 euros per day to rent a vehicle, compared to 35 euros in 2020 and 46 euros in 2021. In France, we even reach 48 euros on average per day, i.e. 49% increase!

Some cities are also breaking records since, for example, you have to pay more than fifty euros a day to rent a car in Ajaccio (+101% increase compared to 2019), in Figari (+98 %), in Bordeaux (+49%) or in Nice (+84%).

Faced with a persistent shortage and high prices, users are therefore taking the lead.

While reservations were previously made around thirty days before taking possession of the car, the first figures for 2022 from Carigami.fr indicate that the French are currently anticipating their request by 57 days on average.
