An obsession of motorists subscribed to collisions, the bonus-malus system can seriously increase the bill for your insurance premiums!

But do you know how it works exactly?

Small recap.

This system consists of modulating the amount of your contributions according to your behavior on the road and more specifically accidents in which your responsibility, even partial, has been recognized, resulting in the passage of compensation from the insurer.

In other words, it is a system of good and bad points awarded to the best and especially to the worst drivers who cost their insurance company dearly!

On the calculation side, everything starts from the first premium, called the reference premium in your contract.

This is associated with a coefficient of 1. Each year without a faulty claim leads to a reduction of 5%.

Thus, at the end of the second year the premium will have a coefficient of 0.90 (1-10% = 0.90).

The amount paid is therefore obtained by multiplying the reference premium by the current coefficient.

For example, if it is €50 per month, after 4 years, it will increase to €40 (50 x 0.80).

The coefficient therefore decreases from year to year until it reaches the maximum reduction of 50% (excluding commercial promotions carried out by certain companies) after 13 years.

A limited increase

Conversely, each accident increases the premium by 25%.

Thus, if the first accident occurs during the first year, the coefficient will increase to 1.25 and it will be necessary to wait one year without an accident to return to the initial level, while any new responsible incident will cause another increase.

However, the maximum penalty cannot exceed 350% of the premium (coefficient of 3.5).

Which, for our premium of €50, still corresponds to an amount of €175.

The only comfort, if your liability is only partial, the increase in your penalty will be limited to 12.5% and your coefficient will return to 1 without any other responsible accident for two years.

But beware, additional increases can further increase your penalty in the event of aggravating circumstances.

A claim suffered under the influence of alcohol can thus justify an increase of 150% of the premium, against an increase of 50% if your driving license has been suspended for 2 to 6 months and +100% beyond that.

In the event of multiple suspensions in less than 3 years, your insurer may even impose a 200% increase on you.

To cancel these various additional premiums, it is then necessary to allow two consecutive years to pass without an accident.
