Because Euro 7 (2025) emissions standards will make upgrades to conventional mini-city cars too expensive (read petrol), more and more manufacturers are letting it be known that their affordable and economical small models will be replaced by 100 % electric which, barring a miracle, will of course be much less affordable.

But like the village of Asterix, Toyota resists and launches the Aygo X (pronounced "Aygo cross"), which maximizes its chances of success by taking a slightly "crossoverized" shape.

We never fail to mention our weariness in the face of the endless SUV wave, but with its self-confident attitude, its plunging profile and its well-chosen color mixtures, this little beast frankly cracks us up.

And to see it like that, you wouldn't believe it gained more than 23 cm in length, for a total of 3.7 m.

Which is still very reasonable for a car intended to be parked in town.

The interior is modern, smiling despite the dominant black, and qualitative despite the hard plastics, unavoidable (for their lightness) in this category.

The central 9'' screen gives access to an obviously connected multimedia system, equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay… wirelessly!

The little "Toy" has not finished with technology, since it also boasts one of the best levels in terms of driving aids, with for example active lane keeping aid and assistant emergency avoidance manoeuvre, all standard on all versions.

Always in the loop

Only downside, the 9 cm long wheelbase hardly benefits the rear seats, among the most cramped in the segment.

But the Toyota compensates with an honest trunk of 231 liters.

As we said at the beginning, the most amazing thing about this new Toyota is that it is not… electrified.

At all.

It is content with a classic gasoline engine, 3 cylinders, 1.0 liter, 72 hp.

Small mechanics, which befits the primary mission and the featherweight of 940 kilos.

With this engine, Toyota offers a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT auto.

We have tried both.

Of course, this is not the kind of car in which you tear off the pavement.

That said, the car displays great versatility despite its modesty.

In particular thanks to a fairly rare damping comfort in the category and excellent soundproofing.

But, above all, thanks to the gearboxes.

The CVT certainly grinds the engine when you “attack” hilly roads, but it takes the advantage in terms of urban consumption and is practically on a par with the manual on mechanical ardour.

Consumption balance?

Still less than 5 l/100 km, despite the relief of our route and our right foot in a happy mood.

Yet this is the kind of car that Europe is slowly killing.

The Toyota Aygo X starts at €15,990.
