Itochu Corporation, a major trading company, has announced that it will be the first in Japan to start full-scale sales of fuels that use plants as raw materials and that emit less carbon dioxide, which airlines are aiming to utilize.

According to the announcement, ITOCHU will partner with a Finnish company to import and sell fuel for aircraft called "SAF" for the first time in Japan.

"SAF" is manufactured by mixing biofuel made from plants and waste oil with conventional jet fuel. Overall, including the manufacturing process, it emits 80% to 90 carbon dioxide compared to conventional fuel. It means that it can be suppressed by about%.

The company plans to import 10,000 tons of SAF annually from Finnish companies and start supplying it to airlines operating in Haneda and Narita this spring, and will gradually sell it while increasing the import volume in the future. I want to expand.

Regarding SAF, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has set a goal of replacing 10% of the aviation fuel used by domestic airlines with fossil fuels by 2030, and "ANA Holdings" was the first to introduce it in Japan.

ITOCHU wants to support the decarbonization efforts in the aviation industry by establishing a full-scale supply system for SAF in Japan.
