The airline Norwegian is avoiding Ukrainian airspace for the time being due to the heightened security situation in the area around Ukraine in the conflict with Russia.

The Norwegian airline confirmed this on Monday when asked by dpa after the TV2 broadcaster had reported on it.

According to a company spokeswoman, Norwegian does not fly directly to Ukraine, but occasionally flies through western parts of Ukrainian airspace on routes to Antalya in Turkey.

Norwegian communications chief Esben Tuman had previously told Norwegian broadcaster TV2 that after a comprehensive safety assessment, the decision had been made not to fly over Ukraine for the time being.

Safety always comes first.

In general, it does not fly over Ukraine often and avoids eastern parts of the country after the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014.

The Dutch airline KLM announced at the weekend that it would discontinue its flight connections to Ukraine.

Other airlines are considering similar steps.
