The
Government of Spain
has come out in defense of Spanish companies against the attacks of the Mexican president,
Andrés Manuel López Obrador
, whom he has asked for
"respect"
and to avoid
"this type of demonstration".
"The Government of Spain
categorically rejects
the disqualifications made by the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in recent days
against Spain and Spanish companies.
Spain and Mexico are strategic partners and we are united by deep human, cultural, historical, linguistic and economic. More than 175,000 Spaniards live in Mexico and close to 30,000 Mexicans reside in our country. Spain is the second largest investor in Mexico and has 7,000 companies in that country. Spanish investment rises above 70,000 million euros and the Mexican in Spain exceeds 25,000 million," they said in a statement.
They have added that "Spain will always work to maintain the best relations with Mexico and strengthen ties with this sister nation", but have called for "
relations based on mutual respect
, as the Spanish and Mexicans want,
without this type of demonstration
" .
The statement came after the Mexican president clarified on Thursday his willingness to "pause" economic relations with Spain.
López Obrador has explained that he wants to "calm down" relations with the Spanish companies that "have abused" his country, such as
Iberdrola, OHL, Repsol and BBVA
, as he himself has quoted.
"They are Spanish companies, supported by political power, that abused our country, our people and
that saw us as a land of conquest
," said the Mexican president.
López Obrador said on Wednesday that these companies
"were like the owners of Mexico."
There was
"
an
economic and political promiscuity in the leadership of the governments of Mexico and Spain
, like three six-year terms in a row and Mexico got the worst of it, they
looted us
," he said.
The Mexican president considers that
"now the relationship is not good"
and says that he would like to "take a
break
" that he believes will be convenient for everyone: "the Mexican people and the Spanish."
