• Banca Carlos San Juan delivers the 600,000 signatures of the 'I'm older, not an idiot' initiative

  • Adjustment of the sector Half of the branches, 39% fewer employees and 22% of ATMs eliminated

"We want specific measurements, not makeup, not appearances."

Yesterday, with this phrase between exclamations, the Vice President of Economic Affairs,

Nadia Calviño

, greeted Carlos San Juan upon his arrival at the Ministry of Economy.

She did it among a swarm of microphones and media cameras that gave a good example of the interest that the initiative of this 78-year-old retiree has raised to demand measures against the financial exclusion of the elderly in Spain.

Yesterday, San Juan delivered to the Ministry and the Bank of Spain the

600,000 signatures that it has collected so far

to support its campaign

"I'm older, not an idiot"

and also held a meeting with the Secretary General of the Treasury,

Carlos Cuerpo

, to personally transfer his claims.

Minutes later he did the same, albeit improvised, with the vice president.

"I want to hear from the banks that the timetable is going to be resolved and that it does not become a monopoly, because all the banks have agreed to limit our access and tell you that we are going to ask for money from the bankers' pockets. And No. It's about our money," San Juan said.

Calviño took his glove.

"I hope that between now and the end of the month we can have a plan of effective measures that are put into action immediately and respond to this situation, which is not only a matter of the elderly, but of our society.

What society would we be if we did not take care of of our elders?

So you have no doubt that we are going to do everything possible to solve it", said the

number two

of the Government.

The Executive has made a priority issue of a problem that in recent times, with the advance of digitization and the concentration of the banking sector, has become more evident: the difficulties of the elderly in accessing financial services throughout and country width.

Calviño herself led a meeting with the employers of banks and savings banks on January 21 in which she gave them a month to present measures to improve the situation.

The financial entities have been working on this task since then and, as confirmed by sources in the sector to

EL MUNDO

, they are finalizing changes and measures to improve the situation and will present them in the coming days.

These are measures that reinforce the access and attention services that are now provided and that

will vary depending on the entities, the areas and the specific demands

of their clients.

In the sector, however, there is some

discomfort

because they consider that they are being held responsible for a situation in which the Public Administrations are also involved and that not only affects financial services, but all areas that are immersed in a process of digitization such as the one banks are experiencing today.

"

Financial inclusion in Spain is total.

Another thing is that accessibility must be strengthened for certain groups or certain people, but they are not excluded," the sources consulted point out.

The representatives of the entities meet this Wednesday with the Treasury as part of a series of meetings that the body and its secretary general have been holding in recent days with different financial representatives.

On Monday it was the turn of the Association of Financial Users

Asufin

and the Platform for the Elderly and Pensioners (PMP), which transferred different proposals that should be taken into account to facilitate access for all people to financial services and products in the country. .

"Bank digitization is an inevitable process and also positive for everyone, because it speeds up processes and reduces costs, but it must be undertaken at two speeds so as not to leave anyone behind, outside the system", Patricia Suárez, president of Asufin, told the person in charge of the Treasure.

The organization also presented a

decalogue of measures,

among which are facilitating personalized attention by appointment, prohibiting the charging of commission for depositing or withdrawing cash at the window or enabling an individualized telephone service for the resolution of doubts.
