The Suez Canal Authority announced that the navigation movement in the canal during the month of last January recorded new and unprecedented records throughout history, with the start of the application of increasing ship transit fees as of February 1, after achieving the highest annual revenue last year.

In a statement, the head of the authority, Osama Rabie, said: “The Suez Canal recorded the transit of 1774 ships during the month of January, with a tonnage of 106.1 million tons, compared to the crossing of 1594 ships during the month of January of last year, with a total net tonnage of 106.1 million tons, compared to 104.2 million tons during the previous year. January of last year.

Rabie pointed out that the navigation movement in January is the highest in history, “in terms of the number of ships, net tonnage and revenues achieved, to become the highest compared to the performance rates achieved during the successive months of January throughout the history of the canal,” stressing the start of implementing the increase in vessel transit fees as of Tuesday, “in The world trade movement and maritime transport continued to recover.

Rabie explained that “the regularity of the navigation movement in the canal had a great impact on increasing the total revenues achieved, as the authority’s revenues during January 2022 recorded about 544.7 million dollars, excluding navigation services, compared to 495.7 million dollars during the same month last year, a difference of 49 million dollars, an increase of $49 million.” 9.9%.”

This comes two days after the Suez Canal announced that it achieved a 13% increase in its annual revenues in 2021 compared to the previous year, with revenues of $6.3 billion, explaining that it is the largest annual revenue recorded in the history of the canal.

Rabie said that the Suez Canal's revenues achieved during the past year "the highest annual revenue in the history of the canal, amounting to 6.3 billion dollars, and the largest annual net tonnages of 1.27 billion tons, exceeding all the numbers that were recorded before."

Rabie explained that the international waterway witnessed the crossing last year of 20,694 ships from both directions, compared to 18,830 ships during the year 2020.

Rabie attributed the increase in revenues to “the success of the flexible marketing and pricing policies pursued by the authority in gaining the confidence of the shipping community.”

In November, the Canal Authority decided to increase the fees for ships transiting the waterway by six percent compared to 2021, starting from February, with the exception of cruise ships and liquefied gas tankers from the decision.

The Suez Canal, linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, was opened in 1869, and it secures the transit of ten percent of the international maritime trade.
