Dubai records the lowest average blackout in the world during 2021

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has achieved a new world record in the average electricity outage per subscriber, as Dubai recorded an average of 1.43 minutes of interruption per subscriber per year, during 2021, compared to 15 minutes at a selection of electricity companies in the European Union countries.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said that the authority is working within the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to provide advanced infrastructure in accordance with the highest international standards. Always to enhance the capacity and efficiency of transmission and distribution networks, to provide electricity and water services, according to the highest standards of availability, reliability, efficiency and sustainability, and to keep pace with the increasing demand for electricity and water in Dubai.

Al Tayer stressed that DEWA adopts the latest technologies in the field of energy production, transmission and distribution, and the smart grid is an essential component of DEWA’s strategy to develop advanced infrastructure, pointing out that DEWA’s smart grid strategy includes 10 programs that will be completed in the short, medium and long-term stages by 2035. These include: advanced electricity metering infrastructure, advanced water metering infrastructure, asset management, distribution automation, IT infrastructure, transportation automation, system integration, communications and big data analytics, and security.

He stated that the authority has installed more than two million smart electricity and water meters in Dubai, which contributes to raising efficiency and rationalizing consumption, in addition to enabling customers to monitor their consumption at any time and from anywhere.

In 2020, the percentage of losses in electricity transmission and distribution networks in the emirate was 3.3%, compared to 6-7% in Europe and the United States, and the percentage of losses in water networks was 5.1% compared to With 15% in North America.
