China News Agency, Beijing, January 19 (Reporter Chen Su) The reporter learned from the State Forestry and Grassland Administration of China on the 19th that the "White Paper on the Ecological Status of China's Wetlands of International Importance" released on the same day shows that as of now, the overall ecological status of China's wetlands of international importance has been Maintained stability, the overall water quality showed a positive trend, and the biodiversity richness was further improved. There were 2,258 species of wetland plants and 260 species of wetland birds.

On the same day, the 26th World Wetland Day China home publicity event was held in a combination of online and offline methods. The theme was "Cherish the Harmonious Coexistence of Wetland Man and Nature". ").

There are 64 wetlands of international importance in China, including 63 in the Mainland and 1 in Hong Kong.

The "White Paper" summarizes the monitoring and assessment results of the ecological status of 63 wetlands of international importance in the Mainland in 2020.

The results showed that 63 wetlands of international importance were distributed in 23 provinces, including 48 inland wetlands and 15 offshore and coastal wetlands.

The 63 internationally important wetlands cover an area of 3,727,500 hectares, an increase of the same caliber compared to 2019.

The overall water quality of wetlands has been further improved. Among the 53 wetlands for which surface water quality data was obtained, Class II water accounted for the largest proportion, accounting for 30.19%.

At the same time, in response to the lack of natural water replenishment in 9 wetlands, artificial water replenishment measures have been taken. Among them, the Dalai Lake wetland in Inner Mongolia has replenished 1.839 billion cubic meters of water, and the water diversion guarantee rate has increased to 70%.

The Convention on Wetlands, concluded in 1971, is the world's first intergovernmental multilateral environmental convention. It aims to promote the protection and rational use of wetland resources by all parties by building an internationally important wetland protection network.

Since China joined the Convention in 1992, China has vigorously promoted the protection and restoration of wetlands, and the ecological status of wetlands has continued to improve. It has designated 64 wetlands of international importance, established 602 wetland nature reserves, more than 1,600 wetland parks and numerous wetland protection communities. The wetland protection rate reached 52.65%.

The relevant person in charge of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration said that since joining the "Convention on Wetlands" 30 years ago, China has included wetlands of international significance in the list of internationally important wetlands, which has enabled many important wetlands to be rescued and protected and contributed to the cause of global wetland protection and rational use. made an important contribution.

In the next step, the State Forestry and Grassland Administration will strengthen the supervision of internationally important wetlands, actively carry out wetland ecological restoration, strengthen the prevention and control of alien species, improve wetland management capabilities, and gradually realize the precise protection and management of internationally important wetlands.

At the same time, further increase publicity efforts, raise public awareness of wetland protection, and create a good atmosphere for the whole society to cherish wetlands.
