• Nice airport ended 2021 with two million additional passengers compared to 2020. This is still eight million less than in 2019.

  • Traffic has mainly returned to the national level, for which the airport records a return to 69% of its travelers compared to 2019, when the international reaches 25% of its attendance in the reference year.

  • For 2022, Terminal 1 should reopen in March, and summer is announced with new destinations and new companies.

It was difficult to do worse than in 2020 with the confinement and the almost total cessation of air traffic.

But it could have been even worse with a first half still regulated by health measures.

In 2021, 6.5 million passengers passed through Nice airport, traffic "above [our] expectations", communicated the company.

This is two million more than in 2020, a rebound of 45%.

This dynamic is explained in particular by the return of long-haul flights, to Dubai or New York for example, which allowed Terminal 1 to reopen during the summer period after sixteen months of closure.

But this is mainly due to domestic traffic, which regained 69% of its travelers compared to 2019. That year, the airport recorded 14.485 million passengers and its ninth consecutive year of traffic growth.

A year 2022 under the sign of “optimism”

For Franck Goldnadel, Chairman of the Executive Board of Côte d'Azur airports, "this recovery in passenger traffic demonstrates the strength of our territory's attractiveness, the confidence of airlines and travelers alike in the health security measures put in place implemented, and allows us to be optimistic for the year to come".

For the 2022 summer season, we expect “a lot of new things with, for example, the arrival of new companies like United”, promises the president.

Thus, “the program already has thirteen new destinations” which will be “available for Azureans in Europe, such as Romania, Sardinia or Iceland, but also the United States and Canada”, specified the airport at

“Five companies will serve North America,” the company adds.

Franck Goldnadel also assured that terminal 1 will reopen permanently at the end of March if “the traffic details become clearer”.

"The recovery is important and no longer passes on terminal 2", he concludes.
