The price of a liter of diesel fuel exceeded the 1.60 euro mark for the first time on a national daily average on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the fuel cost 1.601 euros per liter, the ADAC announced.

That's 1.6 cents more than a week ago.

The online service clever-tanken.de currently puts the nationwide average at 1.608 euros for a liter of diesel.

On average, diesel is the most expensive in Konstanz and Trier, where the price is already over 1.71 euros.

Drivers in Mönchengladbach and Zwickau get away with it the cheapest at 1.567 euros.

According to clever-tanken, super petrol of the E10 variety currently costs 1.68 euros per liter nationwide, which is 1.7 cents more than a week ago - but it is still more than three cents missing from the all-time high from 2012.

The increase over the year is drastic.

In January 2021, diesel was still almost 37 cents per liter cheaper on a monthly average.

For Super E10 the difference is a good 32 cents.

The increase in fuel prices follows the oil price, which is currently at a seven-year high of $88.52 per barrel (159 liters) of Brent North Sea oil.
