Supply chain disruptions slow air cargo growth

Geneva News (Reporter Yang Haiquan) On January 11, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released a regular report on global air cargo, showing that due to factors such as supply chain disruptions and capacity constraints, global air cargo demand growth slowed down in November 2021 .

The report pointed out that in terms of freight ton-kilometers, global air cargo demand in November 2021 increased by 3.7% compared with November 2019, the increase was significantly lower than the 8.2% in October 2021, and the capacity decreased by 7.6% compared with November 2019.

Key global air transport hubs continue to experience capacity bottlenecks.

While the global economy continues to boost air cargo, supply chain disruptions have weighed on air cargo growth.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh said: “Air cargo growth in November 2021 halved from October due to supply chain disruptions. All economic indicators point to continued strong demand, but due to labor shortages and the overall logistics system air cargo growth has unexpectedly slowed. Manufacturers are unable to get vital cargo, including personal protective equipment, where they are needed. Governments must act swiftly to ease disruptions to global supply chains before the Covid-19 pandemic permanently damages the economic recovery. pressure."

In order to alleviate the disruption of the air cargo supply chain, IATA issued an appeal to governments: to ensure that flight crews are not affected by air passenger entry and quarantine restrictions during the new crown pneumonia epidemic; to restore international connectivity, including passenger travel, and increase freight capacity; provide innovative policy incentives to address labor shortages; support WHO and ILO action groups to ensure freedom of movement for international transport workers work.
