“Telecommunications Regulation”: 17 million mobile phone subscriptions during 2021

In 2021, the UAE made great leaps in the field of comprehensive digital transformation, relying on the great development witnessed by the telecommunications and information technology sector in the country, which contributed to providing the best services, including applications of artificial intelligence, the Internet of things and big data.

The Communications Regulatory Authority and the Digital Government revealed a significant development in access to digital services in the country, as the number of digital identity registrants reached more than 2.66 million people, who can benefit from more than 8,400 services provided by about 370 service providers through 315 applications and websites. While the Federal Network provided a common digital infrastructure for about 101 government and private entities.

The authority indicated that the number of users of the digital trust platform for issuing and authenticating digital documents for individuals and companies, amounted to about 1.2 million users, who conducted nearly 1.5 million transactions, while 706.3 thousand digital documents were verified through 3159 participation.

She explained that the official portal of the UAE government witnessed an increase in the number of annual visits by 45.7%, as more than 17 million people visited the portal, with more than 27.7 million visits, and the number of pages viewed was 40.78 million. The number of mobile phone subscriptions during 2021 reached about 17 million, or 171% of the population, while the number of Internet users in the country reached about 9.94 million people, equivalent to 99% of the population.

The questionnaires showed that the average time spent by the country's residents on the Internet is about 7.24 hours per day, of which 1.57 hours are the average time spent reading news, and 2.55 hours are the average time spent on social networking sites.

Smart phones

In terms of the population, the percentage of individuals who own smart phones in the country is 97.6%, while 40.1% of individuals own tablets, and 68.6% own desktop and laptop computers.

Regarding internet speeds during 2021, the average download speed on phones was about 177.52 MB, with a 104.6% increase in download speed using the mobile internet compared to 2020, while the download speed using the fixed internet reached 130.99 MB, with an increase of 44.6%.

The number of smart homes in the UAE has reached about 190,000 smart homes that adopt digital technologies, with an annual increase of 9.8% in the size of the smart home sector. With regard to smart dealing using the Internet, 21.3% of individuals manage their bank accounts via mobile, and 59.7% of individuals use a mobile phone to make online purchases.

Federal Decree Law No. 46 of 2021, regarding electronic transactions and trust services, inaugurated a new stage of comprehensive digital transformation in the UAE, which contributes to strengthening the digital economy, supports the achievement of national targets and indicators, and consolidates the country's position to become at the forefront of the leading countries in providing digital services. .

During the year 2021, the UAE achieved advanced levels in digital transformation at the Arab, regional and global levels, to join the list of the best countries in the world in government digital transformation, and to be the only Arab country in this group, according to the Government Digital Maturity Report “GovTech” issued by the Bank. International for 2021.

The UAE ranked tenth globally according to the Global Digital Competitiveness Report for the year 2021, issued by the International Institute for Management Development, to be the only Arab country among the top 10 digitally competitive countries. It also ranked first globally in the same report with four sub-indicators:

The UAE ranked first in the world in the speed of mobile broadband connection "mobile Internet speed", and ranked 14th globally and first in the Arab world in the speed of fixed broadband connection, according to the index of the company "Ookla", an international leader in the field of analysis and testing of Internet speeds.
