The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights attributes the rocket fire to pro-Iranian militias massively deployed in the border area between Syria and Iraq.
Several thousand Iraqi, Lebanese and Afghan Shiite fighters are supporting the Syrian army in the east of the country.
Their task is mainly to secure the land corridor that connects Syria and Iraq and which allows the delivery of arms and ammunition from Iran.

Material damage
The fire targeted the largest base of the US-led international coalition, located in the al-Omar oil field, east of the eastern province of Deir Ezzor.
One of the projectiles hit the helicopter landing strip, causing property damage.
The bombing of al-Omar's Western forces base came the day after an armed drone attack that targeted positions of pro-Iran fighters not far from the Syrian-Iraqi border.
Coalition forces said they thwarted a rocket attack on a US base in Deir Ezzor on Tuesday.
In addition to the skirmishes between the coalition and Iran's allies in this vast desert area,
the Islamic State group
is engaged in active guerrilla warfare against the Syrian army and pro-American Kurdish militias.
