Let's start this test with an observation: looking at the Suzuki catalog, we are perhaps hesitating between the S-Cross and the Vitara, with fairly similar technical sheets.

Although more family-friendly than ever and available in single-drive, the Vitara has always been regarded as the outright compact 4x4.

However, the S-Cross also exists in 4x2 and 4x4 with, what is more, the same 1.4 turbo petrol engine with mild hybridization.

So, how to decide?

First, the S-Cross offers more interior space and a larger 430-liter trunk.

There is therefore something to hesitate, but the S-Cross is more family-friendly.

Crossover Light

We have not finished talking about the Vitara because, in 2022, it will inherit a brand new “self-rechargeable” hybrid engine which, on paper, will be “greener” than the engine we tested. This means that the S-Cross should also receive this new engine which combines gasoline and an electric motor. You might as well know it. Because for the moment, the 1.4 turbo with light hybridization does not allow to evolve over a few kilometers in fully electric mode. The small electric boost is only used for acceleration to reduce consumption and cuts the heat engine a little earlier when you brake or decelerate.

This does not prevent this propellant unit from being very pleasant by being very flexible at low speed and dynamic above 2,000 rpm!

Its 129 horsepower is more than enough to take the S-Cross, which has the big advantage of being ultralight.

Indeed, if he has not grown, he has not gained weight either.

And its 1,195 kg (basic version) give it a ballerina behavior, as well as a controlled consumption of around 6l / 100 km in reality.

Because we know, weight is the enemy of energy efficiency!

Competitive

For the rest, you will be the sole judge of the aesthetic changes of the S-Cross. In our opinion, its imposing grille, large wheel arches and large rear light signature give it more assertive features. Inside, the multimedia system has evolved but we must especially welcome the addition of numerous driving assistance systems which put the S-Cross at the level of its competitors. Special mention is made of the huge panoramic glass roof that bathes the interior in light.

Too bad that at the back, it lacks a bit of storage space and that the backrest is only adjustable in 2 positions.

The finish and materials used also relegate this S-Cross to the lower average of its segment.

But from 27,090 €, its price / habitability / equipment ratio makes it very interesting.

As to whether you should wait for the new hybrid powertrain, it all depends on your travel habits: if you are on the highway more often than in town, the current powertrain should suit you better.
