30 years ago, the car market welcomed the arrival of new sedans like the Alfa Romeo 155, the Volkswagen Vento which replaced the Jetta, or the Xedos 6. At the time, Xedos was to Mazda what Lexus is to. Toyota, that is, a car of the premium segment.

But after having marketed two Xedos models to very confidential sales, Mazda was definitely taking a step back.

Among the disappointed hopes, there is also the Renault Safrane, which never managed to do what the R25 had done in the past: to offer the French manufacturer a place in the market for high-end sedans.

Audi, for its part, presented the estate version of the 80, the Avant, which combined practical and aesthetic advantages.

More popular, the Nissan Micra 2nd generation was going to be a success, while the Suzuki Swift convertible was very discreet in our regions.

What about the luxury sports car market?

BMW offered its 3 Series E36 coupé, Dodge marketed the legendary Viper with its enormous V10 engine, and Jaguar presented the XJ 220, a fast and extremely expensive 549 hp supercar.

In the radius of more affordable sports cars, Honda surprised with the CR-X Del Sol whose hardtop could take place in the trunk, and Mazda persisted in the development of the rotary engine with the very pretty 3rd generation RX7.

In 1992, SUVs did not yet exist as such, but Opel was keen to create one, the Frontera.
