The world's largest furniture firm, Ikea, has decided to raise its prices by around 9% due to rising costs in transport and raw materials, the owner of most of its stores around the world announced on Thursday.

Ikea had previously warned that it was renting more ships, buying containers and diverting goods between warehouses to mitigate supply chain disruptions, but ensures that costs must be passed on to customers as the crisis is expected to continue.

Ingka Group

has stated that prices would rise by around 9% on average in all its markets, with local variations reflecting different inflationary pressures, including raw materials and supply chain problems.

"Unfortunately now, for the first time since inflation has started to affect the global economy, we have to pass some of those costs on to our customers," says

Tolga Öncü

, manager of retail operations.

"

Ikea

continues to face significant cost-raising raw material and transportation constraints, with no planned disruptions in the near future," the group said in a statement, adding that it expected disruptions to continue "well into 2022."

Ingka Group has experienced strong demand during the pandemic, as the population has spent more time at home.

It operates through a franchise system, with Ingka being the main franchise of the owner of the

Inter Ikea

brand

with 392 stores, including urban ones, and 73 smaller store formats.
