In the opinion of Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke, environmental protection and species protection must be taken into account in the planned housing campaign.
“It cannot be about sealing green spaces in the cities,” said the Green politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group.
"We should concentrate on areas that are not so important for species protection."
The SPD, the Greens and the FDP want to ensure the construction of 400,000 apartments a year in their joint government.
The new Federal Minister of Construction, Klara Geywitz (SPD), also campaigned for the ecological design of residential construction.
Also reactivate existing buildings
Lemke also called for "not to deal with everything in new buildings".
Instead, one could "think about better usage concepts for empty houses, including commercial buildings, which exist in many rural areas - often with good rail connections to the city."
According to the Federal Statistical Office, the settlement and transport area in this country expanded from around 40,300 to around 51,500 square kilometers between 1992 and 2019 - this corresponds to an increase of 27.7 percent.
The settlement area increased by around 33 percent and the traffic area by almost ten percent.
