Nuclear power generation could be an issue in this presidential election. Controversy is also heating up in Europe, Germany has a policy of shutting down nuclear power plants and France is on the contrary, classifying it as green energy and building more. Whether nuclear power is eco-friendly or not, our country's conclusion is due this week.

This is Jang Se-man, a reporter specializing in the environment.

is the so-called green classification system in progress in Europe, in which only eco-friendly ones are selected out of all industries and economic activities and made a list, and will be used as a guideline for future financial investment.

If it is excluded here, it means that a return ticket is attached.

The EU has been promoting it for three years, and it will be implemented from the beginning of next year.

The biggest issues are nuclear power and natural gas.

Germany has a plan to close all nuclear power plants by next year, while France is fighting to build more and classify them as green energy.

After the tension between pro-nuclear and anti-nuclear power plants, the EU Commission conducted a separate investigation.

The answer to the survey report in March was that 'nuclear power plants are close to eco-friendly'.

Again, objections abounded over this report, and the characterization regulation of nuclear power plants, which was to be finalized last week, was postponed to next year.

Natural gas is also a concern.

As Russia recently shut down gas pipelines, natural gas prices in Europe soared nearly tenfold compared to this time last year.

Under this circumstance, if nuclear power and natural gas are excluded from the green classification, it is a concern for Europe that the already high energy price could be further raised.

Following the drafting of the green taxonomy, our government is also trying to outpace Europe and finalize it on the 30th of this month.

Nuclear power is excluded from our draft.

This reflects the current government's policy of denuclearization, and it clearly states that nuclear power cannot be regarded as an eco-friendly energy.

Since existing power generation methods such as coal have already been classified as eco-friendly, how much energy demand can be met with renewable energy such as solar and wind power will determine the success or failure of the government's energy policy.
