One Canal of Green Water Replenishes Ten Thousands of Homes-Green Practice on the Eastern Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project

Starting from the Jiangdu Water Conservancy Project in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, the Yangtze River was "lifted" all the way to the north.

Since the first phase of the first phase of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project was fully accessible for 7 years, a total of 5.288 billion cubic meters of water has been transferred to Shandong.

The rivers and lakes are beautiful, the ecology is better, and the people are happy...A ditch of clear water moisturizes the vast Qilu land, depicting a magnificent picture of vibrant, beautiful scenery.

Rivers and lakes recover from south to north

"In the past few years, we have photographed more than 100 kinds of birds around Nansi Lake. Some birds that were nearly extinct have now come back one after another." The photographer Wang who often takes pictures near Nansi Lake Wei said.

In 2002, when the East Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project was launched, the water quality along the water diversion route was very polluted. The Nansi Lake and Dongping Lake, which are important storage reservoirs and water transfer channels, are all inferior to Grade 5 water.

According to the national pollution control plan for South-to-North Water Diversion, the main water diversion line must meet the three types of water quality goals, which is very difficult to control.

Dismantling photovoltaic panels, clearing net cages, retreating fish ponds, exiting coal mines...Shandong Province has implemented a comprehensive package of "iron-fisted lake management" measures to make the five-category water bodies meet the third-category standards.

In the winter afternoon, the surface of Dongping Lake is shining.

Two or three wild ducks swam out of the reeds, and a group of white waterbirds swept across the lake in the distance.

The water from the Yangtze River passed through the world's largest group of pumping stations all the way to the north, reaching Dongping Lake in Tai'an, Shandong, and it had been elevated 40 meters.

“After the Yangtze River water was transferred to Dongping Lake, the water level of Dongping Lake increased significantly, providing sufficient water sources for water delivery to the north.” Zhao Chao, director of Baliwan Pumping Station of the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, said. The small and large water systems are connected, and the water of the lake can better play the self-purification effect of the water body when it flows.

The East Route Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project successively provided 483 million cubic meters of ecological water to Nansi Lake, Dongping Lake and the storage reservoirs of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, effectively improving the production, life and ecological environment of the lake area.

The ecosystems of mountains, water, fields, forests, lakes, grasses, and atmosphere in the Nansi Lake and Dongping Lake areas have been restored. The whitebait, mandarin fish, and saury that have been extinct for many years have reappeared for many years. The rare birds Aurora crow bird, red mackerel duck, and the water pheasant known as the "water phoenix" also returned.

Green ecology moisturizes people's livelihood

A good ecological environment is the most inclusive people's livelihood and welfare.

Good ecology, "grow" new industries, and bring new life.

Thanks to the good ecological environment of Nansi Lake, Weishan Lake fisherman Li Ling, who used to rely on fishing for a living, has eaten "ecological rice."

She runs a fisherman's restaurant in Weishan County, Shandong Province, and is too busy every year during the tourist season.

She said: "Now that the water is better, there are more fish species, and many repeat customers come to taste our "lake flavor"."

The south water that travels north has also significantly improved the water quality of the water receiving area, changing from brackish water and high-fluorine water to sweet and safe water.

After the South-to-North Water Diversion Project introduced the Yangtze River water into Wucheng County, Shandong Province in 2015, Wucheng County became the only water supply county in Dezhou City that has the “dual source” of Yellow River and Yangtze River water. As a result, Wucheng County has achieved 24-hour uninterrupted water supply in both urban and rural areas. More than 400,000 residents in 393 administrative villages bid farewell to the history of drinking high-fluorine water for generations.

"Before this water, we drank underground water. There were a lot of people in the village with yellow teeth. Since the water from the South-to-North Water Diversion Project came over, the water tasted good, without lime scale, and the boiled millet porridge was more fragrant." Pang, Haowangzhuang Town, Wucheng County Said Zhang Jinyun of Zhuangcun.

Green has always been the background color of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

Since the operation of the Jiping Main Canal Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, it has successively diverted water from the Yangtze River and the Yellow River to replenish the source of Xiaoqing River and Jinan Springs by accumulating 340 million cubic meters, greatly improving the water quality and ecological environment of the Jinan Section of Xiaoqing River. Jinan spring water continued to gush.

This year, Jinan has promoted pilot spring water direct drinking projects in residential communities, enterprises and public places, and spring water will gradually enter the homes of the people, so that "Spring City people can drink spring water."

Remarkable benefits of drought resistance and drainage

After the completion of the eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion, Shandong Province has been connected with the supporting projects of the South-to-North Water Diversion and other water conservancy projects through nearly 1,200 kilometers of trunk line projects. With a water supply capacity of 1.353 billion cubic meters, a backbone water network for joint dispatch and optimal allocation of Yangtze River, Yellow River and local water has also been constructed, which has enhanced the ability of water resources supply and water safety guarantee in dry years.

During the severe drought in Shandong in 2017 and 2018, the Eastern Route once became the main force to ensure the safety of water supply in cities such as Qingdao and Yantai.

Gao Degang, a member of the Party Committee of the Shandong Main Line Company of the East Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion, said that the South-to-North Water Diversion has greatly eased the shortage of water resources in Shandong and has become an indispensable water supply source for Shandong.

The meandering water of the Yangtze River moisturizes the high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin.

The construction of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project from Nansi Lake to Dongping Lake was combined with shipping, which opened up the water channel of the two lakes section and added a navigable mileage of 62 kilometers; the waterway of the Hanzhuang Canal section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal was upgraded from a third-level waterway to a second-level waterway, with obvious navigability improve.

On the waterway to Wenglou Village and Weihe Village of Gaolou Township in the middle of Nansi Lake, reporters can see large ships transporting goods everywhere along the way. There are also seven or eight ships connected end to end to form a "water" with a load capacity of over 1,000 tons. train".

The pumping station project and channel project of the east route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project have been effectively connected and implemented in conjunction with flood control and waterlogging removal in the areas along the route, which has greatly improved urban flood control standards and farmland waterlogging conditions.

This year, Shandong has encountered a rare autumn flood, and the largest flow of flood since 1988 occurred in the Shandong section of the Yellow River.

In order to ensure the safety of flood control of the Yellow River, the Jiping Main Canal Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, along with the Yellow River Crossing Project and Liangji Canal, assisted the successful flood discharge of Dongping Lake. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project once again played an important role in flood discharge and drainage.
