In a test schedule largely dominated by electric novelties, which have the merit of existing but are not always fun to drive, the presentation of the new Toyota coupe was a real breath of freshness, which has rejuvenated us by 20 years !

Especially since it uses the recipe for one of the funniest cars of recent years, improving all the points that could leave a taste of too little or cause debate ...

Design, for example. While the overall lines of the GT86 were as dynamic and sporty as a coupe should be, the front end could be found somewhat unsightly. On the GR86, there is much more fluidity, a softer look while remaining dynamic. The interior has also evolved, but remains more in the same vein: sober, sober, sober. It's functional, there is nothing to distract the "pilot" excessively! That is. It is also recalled that this is a "2 + 2" coupe, which means that the rear seats are to be reserved for children. But at least the trunk seems sufficient (figures not yet communicated, incomplete technical sheet) to travel in pairs. For the anecdote, we read in the documentation that this trunk is "sufficient to accommodate 4 wheels,ideal for days on the track. ”That says a lot about the car's philosophy!

A real pleasure car

Of course, the most important concerns technical development.

Under the hood, we still find an original Subaru flat 4-cylinder, but it goes from 2 to 2.4 liters, from 200 to 235 horsepower, and from 205 to 250 Nm, which should no longer be fetched from very high speed.

And frankly, the difference in terms of fun is huge!

And that's not all.

This GR 86 plays with bends as if it took them for a playground: its balance is perfect thanks to the rear-wheel drive, the flat cylinder engine reducing its center of gravity, and the work done by the engineers. Because not only is this car more highly motorized than its predecessor, but in addition it is 50% more rigid and 20 kg lighter! The novelty is therefore much more efficient than the GT86, while also showing itself to be playful and dynamic. Its steering is a treat, but not as much as handling a manual gearbox as is still rarely done, with perfect precision.

Anyway, how do you make you better understand that this is a real pleasure car for those who really, really love to drive?

And all this without breaking the bank, because even if the exact price remains to be defined, we know that it should be around 35,000 €.

All real car enthusiasts should buy a GR86, if only to thank Toyota for offering us such a machine again!
