The European Union (EU) has closed, after two days of intense negotiations, an agreement on the distribution of the
fishing quotas in the Atlantic
and the working days in the Mediterranean for 2022.
"We have an agreement,"
announced Council spokeswoman Emma O'Driscoll at 9:00 local time.
Finally, the agreement reached includes an 8% cut in the catches of southern hake in the Cantabrian Sea and between Finisterre and the Gulf of Cádiz, which represents the third year of decline in fishing, although an improvement compared to the reduction proposed by the Commission. European 18.5%.
Other species of interest to the Spanish fleet in the Atlantic, such as sole from the national fishing ground, will also suffer a decrease of 5%, while the quota for pollock remains with respect to last year.
The initial proposal from Brussels
was rejected by Spain
due to the cut imposed in particular on hake in Iberian waters, the species with the highest commercial value for the national fleet, as well as sole and Norway lobster.
Spain was also opposed to
reducing fishing effort by another 7.5% for trawling
and longlines in the Mediterranean.
